Sensational Saturday Tasting
One of the few advantages, for wines lovers, of the recent recession has been the opportunity to find some real bargains in first and second label wines from top producers.
Garret Jakobsson will be your host this week as he shares a number of value oriented selections from the Vintage Wines portfolio.

KUENTZ-BAS Alsace Blanc 2007, France $15.99
The usual Alsatian suspects grape-wise are most likely involved (Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, etc) but the key here is that all the elements have combined to paint a bright, unoaked, mineral-flecked, terroir-driven picture of Alsace,a ball many of Kuentz-Bas' peers have managed to drop. A dry, versatile house white for those of you pining for the days when Alsace on the label meant something...
SUBSTANCE Riesling 2008, Columbia Valley, Washington
Rated "Outstanding" with peach blossom aromas, this intense, dry wine shows flavors of melon, citrus and apricot with great acidity. Especially delicious with smoked salmon or any foods seasoned with ginger, coriander, or caramelized onions.
MICHAEL SULLBERG Merlot Reserve Lot 91, California $11.99
MICHAEL SULLBERG WINES was founded with the unique concept of providing high quality, varietally honest California wines that are truly priced to sell. Aged in small French oak barrels, this wine offers distinct aromatics of oak balanced with ample flavors of ripe cherry, blackberry
and plum before a long, velvety finish.
KAMIAKIN Red Blend 2008,Yakima Valley, Washington $16.99
Kamiakin Red captures light like well polished garnet. A vibrant red that charms the eye. It has a lovely, dark chocolate covered cherry bouquet with additional black fruit and pepper notes. It's enchanting personality is further expressed with a hint of anise. The palate is smooth as silk, expressing lovely fresh fruit, finishing with supple tannins. Just a sip fills the mouth with satisfaction and a light spiciness.
HENDRY HRW Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Napa Valley, California
This wine tastes like George Hendry accidentally put half of his Block 8 Old Vine Cab into the wrong bottle and just said, "Screw it, throw the labels on 'em and sell it." Hendry doesn't buy any grapes so this is entirely estate grown fruit. This wine is going to seriously ruin the party for a lot of wineries trying to hock their $40 & $50 dollar wines. Delivers interesting mint, tea and cocoa, berry and orange rind aromas. Firm, but fine-grained tannins wrap up a round, full, berry palate.
