June 28, 2010 Edradour is produced in Scotland's smallest distillery - and is hand made today as it was over 150 years ago by just three men who are devoted to the time-honoured methods of whisky making. Edradour 10 year old is a unique, hand-crafted single Highland malt whisky, often enjoyed in recognition of those small, significant moments that make up the ebb and flow of life. If you manage to find it, you will be one of the few people lucky enough to experience its charm - golden in the glass, smooth and creamy with a nutty, honeyed finish.

SMOKEHEAD Islay Smokehead is a rich, seaweedy and intensely peaty whisky. The flavour is fresh, fruity and immense, with notes of sherry, iodine, toffee, smoke and sea salt all fighting for recognition. Like a cannonball - hits the palate at once with cocoa, peat and some honey sweetness then explodes with peppery spice and more earthy peat. Spreads to all the areas of your mouth with more peat and light sweetness. Even more peat, spice, mandarin - then dries up. When you think it's all over the peat comes back to hit you again. A really vigorous whisky not for the faint hearted ... savour and enjoy!

KOVAL Boutique Distillery Koval Distillery is in a little storefront on North Ravenswood Ave., just south of Foster, directly across from the Metra tracks, in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago. Their products are certified both organic and kosher, and they are a 100 percent grain-to-bottle producer. They are making grain spirits primarily. They have five white whiskeys (but don't tell anyone, it's illegal!), each made from a different grain: rye, wheat, oats, spelt and millet. This is white whiskey in the eau de vie style; a very clean spirit with a light but distinctive flavor of the underlying ingredient. Though subtle, that flavor is deep and well constructed. Koval Midwest Wheat: Banana, floral notes with a hint of honey. Koval Rye: Round, smooth, warm, floral undertones, and a hint of vanilla.

ROUGHSTOCK Montana Whiskey Nestled at the base of the Bridger Mountain Range in beautiful southwestern Montana, RoughStock Distillery is quietly hand crafting the First Best Whiskey in the Last Best Place. RoughStock Montana Whiskey doesn't taste like anything out there. The taste profile is a blend between an unpeated single malt European whiskey crossed with a high end Bourbon. With great malt and grain flavor from the barley that you'll find in a good European single malt and the fuller finish from using the brand-new barrels that impart all of those good caramel/vanilla/fruit notes you find in premium Bourbons, you get the best of both worlds!

June 3, 2010 A FEW LOVABLE CABERNETS Scanning the shelves this week uncovered this collection of cabernets either new to the store or returning at an even better value. Take a browse then stop by and take a bottle. You've got some good drinking ahead. Lola Kay Red Wine 2006 Napa Valley, California $21.99 Lola Kay is essentially the second label of Rubissow a Mt. Veeder based producer that has been doing impressive things with estate grown Mountain fruit dating back to the mid 80's. With the Lola Kay imprint they source their fruit from friends, neighbors and other local vineyards that have some extra high quality fruit they can't use for one reason or another. This first release is a blend of Cabernet Franc (52%), Merlot (35%), Syrah (10%), Cabernet Sauvignon (2.5%), and Petit Verdot (0.5%). It was aged in all French oak, 40% of the barrels were new. Spicy, high-toned red berry fruit dominates a mouthfeel that's bright, clean and (dare we say?) fun. It's the sort of wine that asks you to take another sip, and at this price, you'll have a heckuva time turning it down. Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Napa-Mendocino-Sonoma, California $18.49 Reg. $21.49 Aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, begins with ever-changing aromas, characteristic of mountain fruit. Ripe plum and lush vanilla overtones back aromatics thick with exotic spice and black currant fruit. This opulent palate is reminiscent of classic Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon. This bright and robust wine with superb balance and structure is full of lush plum and cherry flavors, layered with vanilla oak that extend into an elegant finish.
Raymond Family Classic Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Napa-Sonoma-Lake, California $19.99 Full-bodied and well-structured with bold tannins and a spicy pepper finish. The nose exudes rich aromas of black tea, black currant, and marionberry alongside just a hint of eucalyptus. This rich, powerful wine has a lot of structure and is beautifully layered with flavors of plum, anise, and red currants balanced by firm tannins and a spicy black pepper finish that will allow this wine to stand up to a gorgeous cut of marbled steak.
Substance Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Washington State $20.99 The 2008 Cabernet is like putting on your favorite pair of jeans. Immediately familiar and comfortable. The 2008 Cab is medium bodied, with more herbs and earth than red and black fruit. Its soft, elegant and reminds you of home.
Merkin Vineyards 'Chupacabra' Red Blend '06 California $24.99 Reg. $27.99 Merkin Vineyards is owned by novice winemaker Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of the bands TOOL and A PERFECT CIRCLE and descended from Northern Italian winemakers. The Merkin Vineyards "Chupacabra" is a shape-shifter wine, evolving vintage after vintage. In 2006 it contains a large percentage of top-notch Caduceus Sensei fruit. Bold and mysterious, the wine shows both a light and dark side. From black fruit, tobacco and mushroom aromas and flavors to kiwi, grapefruit and nettle on the lighter end, this smoky, complex red is enticing from first sip.
Hudson Shah 'CAB' Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Rattlesnake Hills, Washington $13.99 The Hudson Shah CAB is open and forward, showing juicy cherry and strawberry flavors. With clean, precise, muscular fruit notes from Rattlesnake Hills grapes, this toasty Cabernet is infused with rich coffee and mocha. The finish is elegant with a soft barrel tannin touch.
